Summary

Poetry for Neanderthals is a competitive word-guessing game where you can only give clues by speaking in single syllables. So, instead of saying "broccoli," you'd say something like "green thing you eat for live long and have good health." If you mess up and use a big word, such as "vegetable," you get bopped on the head with a NO! Stick and you lose points. The goal of the game is to score the most points by correctly interpreting words and phrases. The chosen Poet starts off the game with a Poetry Card and tries to get their teammates to say the listed word, using only words with one syllable within a 90-second time limit. The team with the most points is the winner.

Mapping Warning

Game Rules

Objective of the Game

Score the most points by correctly interpreting words and phrases.

Setup

Group into two teams, sitting in alternating team positions. Choose a first neanderthal poet. One of the neighbouring players who can see the poet's card gets the "no stick".

Gameplay

Start the 90 second timer. The poet (and the neighbour with the "no stick") looks at the Poetry Card. The poet trys to get their team to guess either the animal depicted on the card (for 1 point) or the word on the card (for 3 points). They do this by speaking about the thing in single syllable words. The rest of the team can shout guesses willy nilly. When someone gets it, put the card into a score pile (face down if it was an animal or face up if it was the word). The poet may also skip a card by placing it face down in the opponent's score pile (giving them one point). You can't use words with more than one syllable, say any word, part of any word, or any form of a word that is on the Poetry card (unless someone on your team has already said it out loud), use gestures/charades, use "sounds like" or "rhymes with", use initials or abbreviations, or use other languages. If the poet violates any of the rules, the player with the no stick bops them, takes the poetry card and puts it face down in their own score pile (taking one point). When the timer runs out, the next player is the poet. When everyone has had one turn as poet, add up points. Whoever has the most points wins!

Everdeck Differences

While the Everdeck images and names are related, the correlation is not as direct as the original game. This results in a slightly harder gameplay. Original game example: Act - 1 Point Act Out - 3 Points
